Welcome To The New Home Of App Store News!

I decided to start moving all of my WordPress blogs over to Blogger.com, due to it's intergration with my Google account services. Nothing else should be effected by this move, everything should continue to work as it did with WordPress.

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave them in the comments of this post.

App Store News Update

So, it's been a while since I have updated this site with new reviews, it's because my iPod touch died on me a couple months ago. I have been working on getting a replacement, but so far it hasn't worked out too well. However, I have a new device and a new App Store to review. I recently purchased the Palm Pre Plus when I switched from Alltel to Verizon on August 14th. I will be doing reviews for the apps in the Palm App Catalog from now on.

I will not be abandoning this site, it will still be updated with the latest iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad news as I come across it.

In other news, I'm thinking about getting an iPad, hopefully within the next couple months. Stay tuned!

Check out the new App Catalog News!

Review: Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 is one of my most favorite video games, and I was thrilled when I saw it in the iPhone App Store, I immedately bought it. However, once I got into the game, I realized that it wasn't like the Resident Evil 4 I had played on a console system, not even close. First, you're just kind of dumped into the game, with no real clue what your supposed to do. Just start shooting at things that move and looks like a zombie. There was no real plot leading up to the gameplay, they gave you the background of what happened at Raccoon City, but they didn't have all the information that they gave you in the console version of Resident Evil 4.

I give the plot of Resident Evil 4 iPhone edition a 1 out of 5.

In the actual gameplay it really isn't all that bad. It has really good graphics for a mobile phone game, certainly nowhere near what you would find on the Xbox or Wii, but it was good for the device it was being played on. I noticed that the game lagged a lot for me, though I am playing it on a 1st generation iPod touch.

There is a Lite and Full version of Resident Evil 4, and it can be downloaded from the Games section of the App Store.

Review: Tap Tap Revenge 3

Tap Tap Revenge 3 is the iPhone version of Guitar Hero in the sense that you play along to songs and score points for the less notes you miss. The touch screen on the iPhone gives a game like this a whole new experience because instead of having to hook up a controller to play like you do on Guitar Hero, the controls are right on the screen.

The game has a few basic songs to start you out with and you can download more from the built in music store. You pay for songs, but you can also download a lot of free songs, unlike Tap Tap Revenge 1 and 2, where all the songs on the store were free. Some free songs on the TTR3 store are locked until you get to a certain level.

The game preforms well on my 1st generation iPod touch, though there was some lag in the game which would make me occasionally miss notes, but it usually only happens when you iPod/iPhone is running out of memory, the fix for this would be to restart your device.

Another new feature new to TTR3 is Chat. You can now chat with other TTR players from around the world. You must be 13 years of age or older in order to *technically* chat, but who really listen to rules anyway? :P

Tap Tap Revenge 3 is Free and can be downloaded from the Music section of the App Store.

Review: Wild West Pinball

Wild West Pinball is a new take on the classic Pinball game, however, you won't find it in any arcade store. It'll be on your iPhone.

Wild West Pinball, as you may have guessed, is set in a western theme, the backdrop looks like a desert, with goldmines, traintracks, even Dirty Harry. Is it hard to play? No! All you have to do is tap on the left or right side of the iPhone's screen if you want to control the flippers, just like you would press the buttons on the side of an actuall Pinball game in an arcade.

Wild West Pinball has many different ways to earn bonus points, you can 'rob a bank', 'kill Dirty Harry'. and get a 'goldmine'. All of these will earn you bigtime points, besides how long you can keep the ball in play. You only get four balls per game so use pay attention!

Wild West Pinball is Free and is in the iPhone App Store.

Wishing you happy gaming and the return of,

TwitterFon

TwitterFon is an easy to use, you guessed it, Twitter client. Twitterfon has a simple UI and, in some places, a SMS-like interface for Direct Messages.

TwitterFon also has Twitter Search built right in, so you can search for topics.

Below are a few screenshots of TwitterFon.

Pandora

Pandora is the well known web radio app based on the Music Genome Project. There iPhone application provided all the functions of the website:

1. You can create stations

2. You can edit station

3. You can skip songs

You also have the Quicklist option, which plays songs selected from all your stations.

Pandora is one of the best Radio apps out there for me (next to AOL Radio and Slacker) and I HIGHLY reccomend this app. You don't need to create an account to listen to stations.

Pandora is free and is available in the Music section of the App Store.

Fring

Fring [link], is yet another Instant Messenger client for the iPhone/iPod touch. The biggest thing about fring is that it includes Skype support, something that MobileChat, Palringo, IM+ and Beejive don't have.

But that is the only good thing about fring, It still has a long way to go if it wants to be the top free IM app in the App Store. Fring currently doesn't allow you to to change your status, so as long as you are logged in, you are avaliable. Also, it will show contacts as online when they aren't. The latest update was said to fix this, but so far, this is not true.

I would reccomend you go with Palringo for now, if you want a good IM client for the iPhone

FlyCast Updated

FlyCast Mobile [link] was updated yesterday and it included some minor tweaks.

Twitxr

Twixtr [link], is a Micro-blogging site like Twitter that is focused around sending pictures rather then just short status messages. Yes it does have the 140 caracter limit so in many ways it's just like Twitter but far less popular.

The iPhone application has a simple interface with three options at the bottom of the screen so that you can view your profile or send a message/picture and change prefrences. The app does use the iPhone's location based service. This cannot be turned off, it requires that you enter your current location if your location can't be found. Of course you can deny the application to use the iPhone 3G's GPS, but either way, you still must manually enter your location.

Twitxr is free and can be found in the Social Networking category of the App Store.

FlyCast Mobile

FlyCast Mobile [link] is a internet radio application for the iPhone/iPod touch that brings together many different radio stations from .977 and 1.FM, it also covers local stations like the great KGO. I find that most of the sations are high quality. The app has a built-in internet connection tool to test your connection speed to tell if you can play EDGE, 3G, Wi-Fi or video broadcasts. It also comes with a built-in web browser so you don't have to leave the application to browse the web.

This application is free and is available in the Music category of the App Store.

Yahoo! oneConnect

I recently downloaded oneConnect from the App Store and so far, I love it, it allows you to update your status across many social networking sites like Facebook, YouTube, MySpace and Twitter. It also allows you to view the updates of your friends of the above networking sites. It also acts as a Yahoo! Messenger client as well.

This application is free and can be found in the Social Networking category of the App Store.

Rooms: A follow up review.

Alright guys, here's the deal. A new update was just relesed for Rooms and it has added all of the features that I siad that it lacked in my previous post. I highly reccomend this iPhone Application now. It is now worth the 99¢ it costs. You can follow the link to Rooms in the App Store in the other post or you can click here to go to the Rooms download page.

P.S: Another thing that I didn't mention in the other review of Rooms is that it does cost 99¢. I think 99¢ is perfect for this app.

Rooms - Your Mobile Chat Client

As this is the first review that App Store Reviews has reviewed (notice how I am using the word "review" in all of it's pretenses) I decided to do it on one of my most favorite apps, Rooms. Rooms is the first and only non-web based IRC client for the iPhone/iPod touch. according to the discription on the App Store page, it is based on "The Colloquy Project." Now I use Colloquy on my Mac and I must say that it is the best IRC client that I have ever used and has a great UI. It is the same for Rooms, it has a simple UI that anybody can learn in about 5 minutes.

Now, time to move on to the features (or lack there-of)

Now, unffortuneatly, there are some downsides to Rooms. First of all, it is still in a beta form, so a lot of features that you would expect in a good IRC client are not there quite yet.

To start this off, one of the features needed for anybody with a registered username on an IRC server is some form of password input. Rooms lacks this feature. Why? I don't know, maybe the creator thought that people could just add [iPhone] to the end of their username. Who knows.

The next feature that is not present in Rooms is the basic "/" commands for instance, if you want to change your nickname, you have to go into the settings for the server that you want to change your nick for. If you enter /nick you get a message that says "/nick is not a valid command." This could be a for channel owners that do not have a bot in there channel.

Over all, Rooms still needs a lot of improvements, but it is usefull if you just want to look at a channel that you own while on the go. If you want a IRC client that can do more then what Rooms can do at the moment, I would suggest Mibbit, it works on the iPhone/iPod touch and is web-based.
